What's the progress:

Finished

Some classic car restorations begin with a clear vision, while others start with a shocking discovery. When this iconic 1962 Mercedes-Benz 190SL arrived at Benefit AutoKlassika in 2021, it carried a wild backstory that made its transformation all the more rewarding.

A Gift That Turned Out to Be a Mirage

Years before reaching our shop, the car was purchased as a grand birthday gift by the owner for himself. The seller promised a classic in "really good shape" that needed nothing more than a light cosmetic touch-up. The reality, however, couldn't have been further from the truth.

When the car arrived in Estonia, it turned out to be in horrible condition:

  • Hidden Rust: Structural corrosion was rampant across the bodywork and undercarriage.
  • Cover-Up Paint Job: The shell was buried under thick layers of incorrect paint, complete with heavy, visible paint drips.
  • Cut Up and Abandoned: The client initially took it to another garage, but overwhelmed by the scope or lack of time, the previous shop simply cut parts of the car apart and left it sitting in pieces for years.

Hollywood Glamour Meets Workshop Craftsmanship

Adding to its remarkable history, research revealed that this 190SL originally belonged to Angèle Durand, the famed Belgian singer and actress who captivated audiences across Germany during the mid-20th century. A car born with star-studded provenance deserved far better than being left in pieces.

When it finally landed on our workshop floor in 2021, our team stepped in to undo years of neglect, improper storage, and amateur metalwork.

A True Labor of Love

As the full restoration process unfolded, the project naturally grew in scale, time, and investment. Stripping away the bad repairs, tackling deep metalwork, and precision-fitting new panels meant it certainly cost a pretty penny.

Yet, what could have been a cautionary tale turned into something far better: a deeply personal passion project for the owner. There is nothing more rewarding for our team than restoring a legendary vehicle for a client whose love and commitment to the car only grew stronger with every step of the journey.

After years of relentless craftsmanship and dedication, the journey came full circle: the fully restored 190SL was officially completed and handed back to its owner in 2025. Today, it stands as a breathtaking tribute to timeless elegance, shedding its troubled past to reclaim the star power it was always meant to display.
